In the very South of Laos, we discover in 2 days the 4000 islands that form a real archipelago in the bed of the Mekong River upstream of the huge waterfalls of Khone Pha Pheng.
How to get from Pakse to the 4000 Islands?
There are many agencies that offer this trip by bus or van for a small fee. We have chosen Pakse Travel Co, which is located opposite the Friend Ship Mini Mark supermarket, 2 minutes from our hotel. The journey (2h30 by bus + 30 minutes by boat) cost us about 6 Euros to the island of Don Khone where our hotel was located.
What to do, what to see on the 4000 islands?
The many waterfalls with Khone Pha Pheng Falls, known as the Niagara of Asia, are the main attractions of the site.
The other attraction of the 4000 Islands is the observation of the dolphins known as Irrawaddy dolphins which are off Don Khone.
On the good advice of our guesthouse, we made a small excursion in waterfalls very close to Don Khone (Khone long waterfall).
On the way back, we were able to observe some dolphins and admire the sunset over the Mekong River. A beautiful afternoon of discovery in solos (we were alone) for 15 € per person.
But what I appreciated most about this site was the release and the reverie that the place inspires. Sit back, relax and meditate far from the hustle and bustle of cities and our daily lives….
I will probably tarnish the picture, but I must point out that these islands are, unfortunately, very, very dirty. As soon as we approach the villages, rubbish, plastic and all kinds of waste are scattered along the roads and even on the water. It is appalling to see such pollution…
Where to stay on the 4000 Islands – What is the most beautiful place for a quiet stay?
Island of Don Khone: It is the comments of the tourists (rated 9.3/10 on booking.com) that convinced us that this is one of the most beautiful places to stay on the 4000 islands. Indeed, in a magnificent setting with a breathtaking view of the Mekong River and its islets, the Pomelo Bungalow guesthouse is the ideal place to rest.
