Aberdeen and castles of Grampian – My route map
Around Aberdeen – Castle Crathes
Difficult to leave this morning our Bed and Breakfast. It is still raining and the thermometer only shows 8 small degrees (remember we are early August!). But the road and beautiful castles are waiting for us. An excellent breakfast and a glow of sunshine (furtive) give us enough courage to start the day.
After 1 hour drive, we discover the 1st castle of our itinerary of the day. We stop at Crathes Castle, take a walk in the park and take some pictures.
Scotland in 2 weeks – Aberdeen
Some call it the grey city, others the city of granite … The buildings of Aberdeen are mostly built of granite that gives a sad look when the sun is not there.
I wanted to discover Aberdeen precisely for its monumental monuments of the Victorian era while granite including Marischal College. Founded in 1593, it became the second largest university in Aberdeen (King’s College remains the city’s first university).
Around Aberdeen – Fraser Castle
Beautiful castle! It is about 30 km from Aberdeen. Dating from the 16th century, it is one of Scotland’s largest castles with an impressive height (5 floors)!
We decided to make the visit which I thought was very interesting. The Grand Hall features vaulted ceilings typical of medieval times. The dining room is decorated with 17th century furniture. Thus, throughout the visit, we discover from piece to piece the history of Scotland. Of course like the majority of Scotland’s castles, you will learn that it is populated by ghosts …
Outside, its superb park of 140 hectares knows how to emphasize the Castle of Fraser! Scots like to picnic in this area, wander through forests and meadows or enjoy the lovely garden.
Tip: the tea room to enjoy homemade cakes in the atmosphere of the kitchen of the nineteenth century castle!
Around Aberdeen – Craigievar Castle
Scotland has many beautiful castles, but Craigievar Castle has something truly unique. With a pink color that makes it look like a fairytale castle, the simplicity of the lower towers contrasts with the tall turrets. And we are lucky to see it under the sun! Look, it changes everything !!!
Cheap hotel in Insch (near Craigievar Castle)
30 minutes from Craigievar Castle on the road to the Dufftown distilleries (our next stop), I selected a Bed and Breakfast that delighted us: LILYOAK BED & BREAKFAST. Kim holds this BandB in an impeccable way! No complaints as the place was convenient for our tour, the room comfortable and clean and the breakfasts too greedy. Price: 80 € including breakfast.
