How to visit Borobudur and Prambanan in 1 day

The temples of Borobudur and Prambanan are very beautiful Buddhist monuments for the 1st and Hindu for the 2nd. Both are to discover because majestic, imposing and beautiful. Especially that both can be easily visited in 1 day from Yogyakarta.

How to get from Yogyakarta to Borobudur and Prambanan?

I had chosen the simplest and most practical solution: a private driver!

But I was able to find out and many local agencies in Yogyakarta offer bus tours that run as follows:

  • Departure from Yogyakarta to Mendut Temple
  • After half an hour we go back to the temple of Borobudur
  • Free time of 2h
  • Then drive to the temples of Prambanan with a visit of about 1h30
  • And finally back to Yogyakarta

Prices vary from 10 to 15 Euros the excursion (entrance tickets are not included).

I had planned the whole day with our guide to be able to take the time and enjoy all the nooks and make beautiful meetings on the spot. And I did well because we have enough time to go to people, question them, take an interest in their culture … Schoolchildren even came to meet us and made us participate in an investigation that ended in laughter and souvenir photos.

The atmosphere on both sites was great. These places are certainly spiritual places but also places where tourists rub shoulders with the Javanese and can thus share good moments with them.

If you want to visit the 2 sites (BOROBUDUR and PRAMBANAN), you can do it in one day. I advise you to take the combined ticket at 35 € for the 2 visits. And the most practical thing is to do the first temple (Borobudur) in the morning and combine the other one in the afternoon (Prambanan).

How to visit Borobudur and Prambanan in 1 day – Borobudur in the morning

At 42 km from Yogyakarta, the temple of Borobudur is the emblematic monument of Java. It seemed huge, gigantic and harmonious. It is a collection of meditation, prayer, Buddhist meditation. These species of bells are actually stupas. In each of them is a Buddha.

Practical information: at the entrance of Borobudur, with the ticket price you are entitled to bottles of water – remember to ask for it because it is very very hot :).

To visit this site, it is strongly recommended to take advantage of the comments of a guide for the historical narrative, the explanations concerning the architecture and for the anecdotes or other stories.

The atmosphere on the spot is rather noisy, agitated, animated because many tourists and classes of schools cross there. But the site is so big that we can still find a little corner without anyone to really enjoy this spiritual and grandiose place. Allow at least 1:30 for the visit.

17 km north east of Yogyakarta, this set of Hindu temples was built at the same time as BOROBUDUR (around the X century). At that time Buddhists reigned in South Java while Hinduism reigned in the North but in perfect harmony and tolerance …

To visit this site, it is also highly recommended to take advantage of a guide’s comments for historical narrative, explanations about the architecture and for anecdotes or other stories.

I found as much pleasure and curiosity to visit PRAMBANAN as BOROBUDUR. These temples are so different and interesting that you do not have to zap one! Allow at least 1:30 for the visit.
